Children’s nature book series becomes a fresh start
Transitioning from your professional career into retirement (however you may define it) can involve a shift in your network. Sadly, some folks will drift away. Truth is, you’re no longer collaborating on projects or otherwise engaging professionally, so your relationship loses some luster.
Responsibility for maintaining – and even growing – your network during this transition falls to you, and it pays to stay in touch, particularly with former colleagues who have left the workplace and, like you, may be searching for that elusive second-act career. If you’re struggling with the same questions or simply wondering about the possibilities, their stories can be inspirational! Here’s one I recently experienced.
I worked with Elle Travis for many years at my last corporate gig. She broke a few glass ceilings. After graduating from Appalachian State University, she became a pioneer for women in business during the mid-70s and was hired into positions traditionally held by men. She was the first female Zone Representative in the Carolinas for Ford Motor Company, a Vice President of Sales for Ceridian Corporation and culminated her career as an Executive Director of Learning & Development for a 26,000-employee pharmaceutical research organization, Quintiles, before departing in 2012.
This week, she did something completely different – she launched a children’s nature book series and made the best-seller list on Amazon. The first of four books, “Spring Magic,” introduces Light Feather, who serves as a guide to the magic of nature. As you might guess, the series will include Summer, Fall and Winter adventures. Elle’s passion? She believes we are living in extraordinary times, and everyone needs to awaken to what really matters: We are all connected through nature as one.
